Whether you want to explore cities with a rich cultural heritage, relax on beautiful beaches, or indulge in some globally-loved food, Thailand has you covered. Bangkok is famous for its markets and iconic Buddhist temples. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai offer mountain views and unique experiences. Phuket comes with beaches and nightlife, Krabi is known for limestone cliffs, and the Phi Phi Islands are loved for crystal-clear waters and vibrant island culture. Thereβs also Koh Samui with resorts and wellness activities as well as Koh Phangan famous for its legendary Full Moon Party.
The country also delivers a punch when it comes to romantic trips. Be it the Princess Chao Phraya Dinner cruise, an overnight stay on the Phi Phi Islands, or enjoying a traditional Thai spa treatment together, there are ample options to choose from.Β
Thailand is one of the most visited countries from India and is a great option for anyone who wants an international trip that gives them a mix of beaches, culture, food, and nightlife. Nonstop flights are available from selected Indian cities and Indian passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism purposes.Β
Thailand offers accommodation and activities across a range of budgets. The cost for a 3 to 5 night trip starts at around βΉ60,000 per person with flights from India or βΉ30,000 per person without flights. However, your final cost will depend on the season, route, hotel category, and experiences you choose. Explore our Thailand Tour packages to know more.Β
Vegetarian and Indian food options are also available in many of Thailandβs tourist areas. To make your visit a success, simply remember to not try and cover the whole country in one trip. Every change of base eats into your itinerary length and can also make it fairly hectic. Choose a route that matches your interests, available nights, and budget.
Here is what each region in Thailand has to offer and some guidance on how you can move between them for a smoothly flowing trip.
Chiang Mai is a favourable base for exploring northern Thailand, and offers old-city temples, night markets, cooking classes, as well as mountain excursions such as Doi Inthanon.Β
Chiang Rai is known for the White Temple, Blue Temple, and surrounding countryside. You can visit here on a long day trip from Chiang Mai, but account for several hours on the road. Staying in Chiang Rai gives you more time to explore without returning the same day.
Both places offer a pace that's calmer than busier tourist spots. If youβre looking for a cultural contrast to the beaches, choose Northern Thailand. On a longer trip, you can even combine it with Bangkok or a beach destination.
In Bangkok, you can spend your day visiting temples, shopping at markets or malls, trying Thai street food, and wrapping it up with a glimpse into the cityβs vibrant night life. Choose a central hotel near the BTS Skytrain to make getting around easier. We generally recommend placing Bangkok at the end of your trip so you can finish with shopping and city experiences before flying home.
Although Pattaya is accessible from Bangkok, itβs pretty crowded and we do not recommend it for a relaxed holiday. Instead, choose the Andaman coast for better beaches and a more serene experience.Β
On a trip thatβs longer than 7 nights, you can combine Bangkok with Phuket, Krabi and an overnight stay at Phi Phi Islands.Β
The Andaman Coast is great for people who want beaches, boat trips and time near the sea. Phuket has resorts, restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Krabi offers limestone cliffs, nice beaches and easy access to island trips. The Phi Phi Islands are popular for water and beautiful sea views.
Krabi is one of our strongest recommendations for limestone scenery, beaches, and island excursions. Base yourself in Ao Nang, a practical base equipped with restaurants offering Indian food and access to boat trips such as Hong Island.
For Phi Phi, we recommend spending one night on the island where your schedule allows. Pick a base near Tonsai Pier for easy access to ferries, tours and Indian food-friendly restaurants.
If you have five nights, thatβs often enough to cover Phuket and Krabi. With six to seven nights you can add a trip to the Phi Phi Islands.
Phuket is on your list? Read our guide to the best time to visit Phuket to understand more about what it has to offer in each month.
Koh Samui and Koh Phangan offer an island experience that's memorable. Koh Samui features luxury resorts, restaurants by the beach, wellness activities and lively areas. This makes a great choice for travelers who want comfort and time by the sea. Koh Phangan feels relaxed with beaches, natural beauty and the famous Full Moon Party.
On a longer trip, Koh Samui can be added to a beach trip that also includes Phuket and Krabi. For a shorter trip, treat the Gulf islands as an alternative to Phuket and Krabi. Combining both coasts requires additional travel time, while adding Koh Phangan also means planning ferry connections.
Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya: Located slightly north of Bangkok, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its 14th-century temple ruins and giant Buddha sculptures.
Khao Sok National Park: An ancient nature reserve thatβs older than the Amazon, this oneβs located in Surat Thani, southern Thailand. Itβs home to the human-made Cheow Lan Lake and floating bungalows.
Kanchanaburi: This town in western Thailand is best known for the Death Railway built during World War II as well as the war cemetery, making it a must-visit for history buffs. When here, you can also visit the Erawan National Park's seven-tiered waterfalls and historic wartime rivers.
Pai: A scenic mountain town near the Myanmar border, this place is known for its bohemian vibe and backpacker culture. Its hot springs, waterfalls, and scenic gorges make it a great fit for nature lovers.
Phang Nga Bay: This oneβs a must if youβre looking for a quieter and less commercialized alternative to Phuket. It offers limestone karsts, sea caves, as well as a floating village complete with a floating football pitch.
Pro Tip: If this is your first trip to Thailand, we recommend covering the Andaman Coast. If youβre visiting for the second or third time, however, make an itinerary that focuses on Northern Thailand and/or the Gulf Coast, depending on available time and budget.
The best time to visit Thailand depends on which region you want to see. The country has two beach coasts with opposite seasons, so thereβs always a favourable coast to be on.Β
You do not have to avoid the rainy season completely. Keep your plans flexible and be open to last-minute plan changes as per the weather. Malls, museums, Thai cooking classes, and spa visits can be good indoor alternatives.

The number of days you need in Thailand depends on how many places you want to cover. Shorter trips work best with fewer bases, while longer holidays give you room to explore another region. With three to four nights, choose one base, such as Phuket, Krabi or Bangkok. If you have five to six nights at hand go for an Andaman coast-focused itinerary: two nights in Phuket, one night on Phi Phi and two or three nights in Krabi.
For a trip of eight to ten nights you can consider visiting Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui with Bangkok included if your schedule allows. If youβre visiting between June to August, consider swapping Koh Samui with Chiang Mai instead. Keep in mind that traveling between areas involves flights, transfers and sometimes ferries, all of which will increase the cost as well as total time.
Getting to Thailand from India is not hard with flights available from major Indian cities. Bangkok and Phuket are good starting points for city trips and beach holidays while Chiang Mai, Krabi and Koh Samui have airports that may suit you based on your plans. The best arrival airport depends on where you want to go and which connections are available for your travel dates.
Travelers departing from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata can find flight options to different parts of Thailand depending on their plans. Bangkok and Phuket are the available choices for people who want to see the city or have a beach holiday while Chiang Mai is a starting point for Northern Thailand. Krabi and Koh Samui also have their airports making them options to think about if you want to reach beach destinations
Before booking, compare the travel time and cost, not the flight price. If your trip includes places, remember to plan for flights, airport transfers and ferry rides.
There is a direct flight option from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Phuket, to Koh Samui. However, itβs a tad bit expensive, and could cost between $100 - $150 (INR 10,000-15,000 approx.) per person.Β
A more budget-friendly alternative is to fly to the Surat Thani airport via low-cost carriers like AirAsia or Nok Air. From the airport, youβll need to take a 90-minute bus/minibus to Donsak Pier, followed by a 45-to-90-minute ferry or catamaran to Koh Samui. The total travel time for this option comes to about 3.5 to 5 hours after landing, but the overall cost is lower.
For Krabi, you can get a direct flight from Bangkok as well as Chiang Mai with operators such as AirAsia and Thai Airways and taking about 1.5 hours.Β
If you are landing in Phuket, the distance between Phuket and Krabi is approximately 160 kilometers. So, you can reach Krabi through buses, taxis, ferries, or private transfers depending on travel preference and budget.
Direct flights to Phuket from major Indian cities are available. The option to take a flight from Bangkok exists on this route, as well. The travel time is around 1.5 hours and you can choose between several daily flights run by low-cost and full-service carriers like Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Vietjet Air, and Thai Airways.
If youβre coming from Krabi to Phuket, you can take your pick between a bus, shared minivan, private taxi, ferry, or a speedboat. Each of these journeys take between 3 to 5 hours.
From Bangkok, thereβs the option of a 1.5 hour-long flight, run by budget carriers like Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, and Thai Vietjet Air, alongside full-service options like Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways.Β
You could also take the more popular and budget-friendly option of a direct train between Bangkok to Chiang Mai taking between 12 to 14 hours, with express options of around 10 hours as well. Booking options include 1st Class private sleeper cabins, 2nd Class air-conditioned sleeper berths, and 2nd/3rd Class daytime seats.
Buses and private taxis also run on this route and take between 9 to 11 hours. For bus bookings, you can choose between standard coaches, express buses, and VIP/luxury coaches.Β
Indian passport holders can currently visit Thailand for tourism without a visa for up to 30 days, subject to entry requirements. Before traveling, check the visaβfree stay limit as it can change. Your passport should have at least six monthsβ validity remaining from your arrival date. Keep a confirmed return or onward ticket, accommodation details, evidence of sufficient funds, and 20,000 THB in cash per person or 40,000 THB per family, in case immigration asks for it.Β
Travelers must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online for free within 72 hours before arrival. Keep the confirmation ready for immigration checks. If you plan to stay beyond the visaβfree period or travel for work or other reasons not covered by the exemption check the visa rules through the official Thailand eβVisa portal before you go.
Before booking your trip, read our guide to Thailand travel rules for 2026 for the entry requirements, visa information and important travel tips for Indian travelers.
Indian restaurants and vegetarian options are easy to find in many popular tourist areas, including Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. The range of available choices can change depending on your neighbourhood, so check what is available near your hotel before booking.
Also, when ordering Thai food, confirm that dishes are prepared without fish sauce, shrimp paste, oyster sauce or meat-based stock. A vegetable dish is not automatically vegetarian. If you require a fully vegetarian kitchen or Jain meals, confirm these requirements directly with the restaurant.
A few practical details can make your trip easier especially if it is your first time visiting Thailand. Keep these points in mind before you head to this southeast Asian country.
Money and cash: Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB). Cards are accepted at hotels, malls and larger restaurants but local markets and smaller food stalls may prefer cash. Carry some Baht for purchases and check your bank's foreign transaction fees before travelling.
Cash requirements at immigration: Travellers entering Thailand under the visa-exemption scheme may be asked to show proof of funds for their stay. The stated requirement is THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family.Β
SIM cards and internet: Tourist SIMs, eSIMs or local SIM are ways to stay connected. Providers such as AIS and True/dtac offer options while an eSIM can save you the trouble of changing SIM cards if your phone supports it. Going for an international roaming plan on your present provider network is also a viable option.
Getting around cities: Bangkok has the BTS Skytrain and Mass Rapid Transit metro for journeys while taxis and tuk-tuks are also available options. Metered taxis are available in major cities, with fares starting at 35 THB in Bangkok. In most other cities, ride-hailing apps such as Grab can be useful for local travel and accept cash or digital payments. Songthaews (shared trucks) and motorcycle taxis are some unique modes of transport available in urban and tourist areas of Thailand. Remember that Uber does not operate in Thailand.
Travelling between destinations: Domestic flights can save time over distances. Island trips may require ferries or speedboats so check departure points and schedules before choosing accommodation or booking activities. For more details, you can refer to our above section about flights.
Currency exchange and card fees: Exchange money at banks or licensed currency exchange counters. International ATM withdrawals and card payments may involve fees depending on your bank, card, and merchant. Check these charges in advance. Choose to pay in Thai Baht when a card terminal offers a currency conversion option.
Temple visits and local customs: Here are some things to keep in mind when in Thailand.

You don't need to fit every attraction into your trip. A few thoughtful choices can leave you with time to enjoy the places you visit.
November to February generally offers comfortable sightseeing conditions in Bangkok and northern Thailand, but popular dates can be busy and expensive. For better value, compare quieter dates around your chosen destinationβs main season. The best timing differs between the coasts: from June to August, we generally recommend considering Koh Samui instead of Phuket or Krabi. Lower prices during wetter periods can come with disruption to boat trips, so compare the weather and full itinerary cost before booking.
Yes, direct flights are available for most major Indian cities. Compare flight options from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata to check which best matches the base of your itinerary. Direct routes depend on departure city, destination and travel dates so check schedules before booking.
In Bangkok, choose a hotel in Siam if youβd prefer something right next to shopping centers and central transit hubs. Go for the riverside area if you have a preference for luxury stays and romantic views. The Khao San road is a classic budget option for those who donβt mind a backpacker hub.
In Phuket, Patong is a good option for walkable access to restaurants, the beach and nightlife. Ao Nang is our recommended Krabi base for restaurants and island excursions. In Chiang Mai, go for stays in the Old City for easy access to historic temples, local night markets, and artisan cafes. In Koh Samui, choose stays around the Chaweng Beach to be within an armβs reach of bars, clubs, street food, and shopping options.Β
Choose accommodation around your plans and check transfer times before booking. Remote stays may be less convenient if you want easy access to restaurants and transport.
Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB) and its value against the Rupee changes with exchange rates. Local food and public transport can be affordable. Resort stays, island tours, shopping and nightlife can increase your spending. Compare the trip budget rather than assuming a holiday in Thailand will always cost less than a holiday in India.
Popular attractions can get busy during peak travel periods at wellβknown temples and island stops. Visit temples early in the day and start island excursions early where possible. Travelling outside the peak months may also help, although weather conditions should be considered.
