The Honest Review of Top Places to Visit in Gili Islands, Bali

The Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small islands or Gili island triplets. Check out the top places to visit there.

Batool fayaz

14/01/2025

With each new journey to Indonesia, a fresh chapter opens up in the enchanting story of these islands. It began with the soulful landscapes of Bali, then ventured through the wild terrains of Komodo and Padar. This time, the Gili Islands in Lombok stole the spotlight, leaving a lasting imprint on my travel map. Just a short day trip away from Lombok, the Gili Islands are an unmissable blend of beauty and adventure, nestled in the Lombok Strait and wrapped in tranquility.

The Gili Islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—each offer a unique slice of paradise. Gili Trawangan, the largest of the trio, stretches over a charming 3 km length and 2 km width, with its name rooted in the local word “Trawangan,” meaning tunnel, a nod to the historical Japanese cave tunnels from World War II. These islands may be lightly populated, but they brim with life beneath the waves, boasting vibrant marine life and some of the most transparent waters in Southeast Asia. Often likened to the Maldives, the Gilis are where I believe a piece of paradise found its home—so much so that when I finally visit the Maldives, they may have to be the “Gili Islands of the Indian Ocean!”

And getting to this paradise is a breeze. Just 35 km from Bali, the Gili Islands are one of the most popular day trips. The swift, scenic journey takes about an hour and a half by fast boat, with departures from Bali’s two main ports. Those staying in Seminyak or Nusa Dua should depart from Serangan, while travelers in Ubud may prefer Padang Bai. Whether planning a relaxed getaway or an adventure-packed day, the Gili Islands offer an escape that’s as easy to reach as it is hard to forget.

Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, fondly known as Gili T, is the heart of Lombok’s Gili Islands and the most developed of the three. Renowned for its shimmering white sands, a wealth of eateries, and lively nightlife, this island has become a premier tourist destination that draws everyone from families to honeymooners and backpackers. Although only 3 km long and 2 km wide, Gili T packs a punch with its tropical charm and unique offerings.

Named after the Indonesian word terowongan (meaning tunnel), the island has a WWII-era cave tunnel built by the Japanese, adding a dash of history to its appeal. Over recent years, Gili T has evolved beyond its backpacker origins to embrace a range of visitors seeking everything from beachfront relaxation to underwater adventures. Diving enthusiasts will find no shortage of professional dive centers, making it one of the best spots for scuba diving in Bali. By day, the island offers a serene atmosphere with fishing boats gliding between Gili T and Meno and no motorized traffic to disrupt the calm; by night, it lights up as a vibrant playground for party-goers.

Regarding accommodations, Gili T has it all—from budget-friendly guesthouses to beachfront mid-range hotels and luxurious villas. The island’s popularity peaks from July to September, so booking in advance is highly recommended. As the sun sets, the beachfront transforms with lively bars, local street food, international fare, and seafood BBQs, creating an irresistible dining scene that caters to all tastes. And the best way to explore Gili T is to rent a bicycle for around 50,000 IDR per day. This charming island has no motorized vehicles, so a leisurely bike ride along the shoreline will reveal every stunning corner in about an hour. The east side offers smooth paths, while the west side may require extra effort, as the road sometimes turns to soft sand.

Beyond the beach, exploring the island’s interior reveals a glimpse of local life and some of Gili T’s best dining spots. However, unlike bustling Bali, Gili Trawangan has a quieter, predominantly Muslim culture. The island is a respectful, modest paradise that appreciates visitors who honor its traditions. While here, embrace the tranquil lifestyle, respect local customs, and enjoy every unhurried moment of this island escape.

Gili Air

Gili Air perfectly blends Gili Trawangan’s liveliness and Gili Meno’s calm. Situated closest to Lombok’s mainland, it’s an ideal escape for backpackers and families who want a taste of the island vibe without the bustling crowds. Life here moves at a gentle, inviting pace, yet there’s plenty to keep any traveler entertained. Daytime on Gili Air brings an array of water adventures—from diving and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters with vibrant coral reefs to catching a few waves. The island hums with live music and low-key parties by evening, adding energy to the peaceful setting.

For nature enthusiasts, Gili Air’s unspoiled coral reefs offer an unforgettable snorkeling experience. The views provide a window into a hidden underwater world. Relaxing on the island’s beaches, with the endless sea in view and the soothing sound of waves, creates a soul-enriching atmosphere that’s hard to match anywhere else.

The island offers a variety of accommodations, whether nestled in serene coconut palm groves or perched on the sandy shoreline, ensuring that every traveler finds their perfect spot. Dining on Gili Air is equally diverse, from beachside local food stalls to restaurants serving international dishes. For early risers, don’t miss the magical sunrises over Lombok’s towering Mt. Rinjani. This spectacular sight adds a serene start to any day on this tranquil island.

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is a quintessential romantic escape, often celebrated as one of Indonesia’s most idyllic getaways. Known for its pristine beaches and quiet ambiance, this is the smallest and most serene of the three Gili Islands, offering couples a secluded paradise for intimate moments amidst the beauty of the tropics. Nestled between the vibrant Gili Trawangan and the versatile Gili Air, Gili Meno feels like a hidden gem—perfect for honeymooners or anyone looking to unwind away from the crowd.

Despite its quietude, Gili Meno offers plenty for those looking to explore. Its highlights include a charming Bird Park, a heartwarming Turtle Sanctuary, and the renowned Meno Wall—a gentle diving site welcoming even for beginners. Dining options are fewer than its neighboring islands but include cozy beachside eateries with fresh local flavors, providing a relaxed yet rich culinary experience. A favorite area for staying is the northwest corner, where you’ll find coconut grove resorts, quaint restaurants, and Divine Divers, the island’s premier dive center.

While this corner offers tranquil days, Gili Trawangan’s nightlife sometimes drifts over as an evening soundtrack, a gentle reminder of the livelier side of island life not far away. Gili Meno combines peaceful seclusion with just the right touch of tropical charm, making it an unforgettable haven for romance and relaxation.

The Gili Islands are a playground for adventure seekers and relaxation lovers alike. From underwater excursions to island-hopping, some must-do activities make the Gilis a top choice for travelers.
