Overall, it remains a popular spot with a loyal following, especially among sunset chasers and nightlife lovers.

What Did Visitors Like?

There are many aspects of Double Six Beach that visitors like, but here are the highlights:

  • Breathtaking Sunsets: One of the biggest draws of Double Six Beach is its stunning sunset views. Many visitors love lounging on the sand or enjoying a drink at beachfront bars while watching the sky turn vibrant hues of orange and pink.
  • Great Surfing Spot: The beach is popular, attracting beginners and experienced surfers alike. Visitors appreciate the steady waves and the availability of surf rentals and lessons.
  • Lively Nightlife: With numerous beach clubs, bars, and restaurants, Double Six Beach is a hotspot for nightlife lovers. Places like La Plancha and Cocoon Beach Club offer live music, great food, and cocktails right by the shore.
  • Soft Golden Sand & Cleanliness: Unlike other beaches in Bali, Double Six Beach is known for its soft golden sand and relatively clean surroundings, thanks to regular cleaning initiatives.
  • Accessible Location: Situated in Seminyak, the beach is easily accessible from hotels and resorts, making it a convenient choice for travelers staying in the area.

What Did Visitors Dislike?

Even though most visitors liked Double Six Beach, some had concerns about the place. here are a few of them,

  • Crowded, Especially at Sunset: While the sunsets are beautiful, the beach gets crowded in the evenings, making it difficult to find a peaceful spot.
  • Strong Currents: Swimming is allowed, but the waves and currents can be strong, especially during high tide, which makes it less ideal for casual swimmers.
  • Expensive Beach Clubs: While the beach has budget-friendly options, many beachfront restaurants and bars are pricey, especially those attached to luxury hotels.
  • Lack of Shade: The beach has limited natural shade, making it uncomfortably hot during the day without renting an umbrella or sitting at a beachfront café.
  • Persistent Beach Vendors: Some visitors find the beach vendors selling souvenirs and services overwhelming, as they can be persistent

Pro Tips to Keep in Mind

While visiting Double Six Beach, here are a few things that you need to keep in mind,

  • Visit Early in the Morning: If you prefer a quieter experience, arrive before the crowds build up.
  • Check the Tide Schedule: Since currents can be strong, it’s best to check tide charts before swimming or surfing.
  • Bring Cash: While some beachside businesses accept cards, many local vendors only take cash, so it's best to carry small bills.
  • Rent a Beach Chair & Umbrella: If you plan to spend a few hours on the beach, renting an umbrella is a good idea since shade is limited.
  • Book Sunset Spots in Advance: If you want a prime sunset spot at a beachfront bar, making a reservation is highly recommended, especially during peak season.

Basic Things to Know about Double Six Beach

Here is some basic information that you should know before planning a visit to this beach,

History of the Double Six Beach

The Double Six Beach has a rich history that can be counted as its merit. It acquired its name from the unfortunate mishap that happened on April 21, 1970, when a local flight crashed off the shore, killing all 96 persons aboard, which included various high-ranked military officers. The Double Six Monument has been erected to remember this incident, and hence, the beach derived its name.

During the 1980s, surfers grew acquainted with Double Six as rumors spread about it being a fine surfing point. The '90s saw rapid development in the area, making it more of a metropolis out of a small county. However, in 2002, another misfortune struck when Bali underwent a series of terrorist bombings, including the attack next to Double Six Beach that left numerous people dead and injured. Tourism dwindled in the area for several years due to this event.

Nevertheless, after some time, attempts were made to rehabilitate Double Six Beach. In 2011, repairs took scope to open it for tourism again. Sometime in 2018, Double Six Beach initiated an officially recognized cleaning campaign toward sustainability and cleanliness.

How to reach the Double Six Beach

How do you reach this beach if you're staying in the region?

Double Six Beach is just 25–35 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport. In 2025, both Grab and Gojek now offer electric vehicle (EV) rides—a greener, quieter alternative at no extra cost. Expect to pay around IDR 100,000–150,000 ($6–10) from the airport.

If you’re coming from Ubud, the ride takes about 1.5 hours and costs IDR 250,000–350,000. From Canggu, it’s roughly 30–45 minutes at IDR 120,000–180,000. These apps remain the safest and most reliable options for visitors.

Scooter rentals are cheap (around IDR 70,000/day), but only advisable for experienced riders due to Bali's unpredictable traffic.

When is the best time to visit Double Six Beach?

Double Six Beach can be enjoyed any time of the year, but if you're keen to maximize sun time, the recommendation is to visit from May to October. This period promises ten hours of sunshine daily, ideal for beach-bound activities and sunbathing. However, the high season might escalate hotel prices, especially for popular places like the Double Six Luxury Hotel.

Entrance fee at the Double Six Beach

There are no entrance fees for this beach. The only fee visitors may encounter is a fee of 5,000 IDR  for car parking. This beach is near almost all the local hotels and resorts, so parking is generally not an issue unless you come from a fair distance away. If parking is needed, it's relatively safe. However, it's best not to leave valuables in the car.

Atmosphere During Different Seasons

Peak Season (May–October) brings sunshine, larger crowds, and a festive buzz. Expect packed beach clubs, high occupancy in nearby hotels, and a lot of activity both day and night.

In Low Season (January–March), the atmosphere is more relaxed. Fewer tourists, quieter nights, and softer surf conditions make it a good time for travelers who prefer a slower, more local vibe.

What to Expect at the Double Six Beach

Visitors who come to Double Six Beach can expect a good atmosphere. It is a paradise for surfers where action is on hand to watch surfers tackle mighty waves. Swimming is permitted, although its confined space near the shore has been cautioned against dangerous currents on high tide. Soft golden sand strewn about is like a blessing for walks, but it can be exceedingly hot on very sunny days.

In the evenings, locals and tourists enjoy stunning sunsets from different vantage points around the beach. The nightlife awakens as soon as twilight falls, with bars and eateries entertaining till daybreak.

Thus, whether one embodies lounging and sun-tanning on the beach during the day or excitement at night, the essence of Double Six Beach lies in its unique combination of calm and vivacity.

Deep Dive into the finer aspects of Double Six Beach

Tragic Origins: Double Six Beach is named after a tragic event, though there are conflicting accounts. Some sources mention a plane crash in 1976 that killed 107 people, including six high-ranking Indonesian generals14. However, another account suggests the name comes from a local flight crash in 19704.

Double Six Club

The beach's name is also associated with the legendary Double Six Club, a popular nightlife venue in the 1990s and early 2000s. This club was known for its vibrant atmosphere and entertainment options like bungee jumping and live music5.

Surfing

Double Six Beach is renowned for its powerful surf breaks, making it a paradise for surfers. There are numerous surf schools and rental shops nearby, catering to both beginners and experienced surfers34.

Sunset Experience

The beach offers breathtaking sunsets, with many restaurants and bars setting up colorful parasols and beachside dining areas. It's a popular spot for romantic dinners and social gatherings34.

Horse Riding

Visitors can enjoy horseback riding along the beach, a unique experience that adds to the area's charm.

Eco-Friendly Initiatives at Double Six

The beach has partnered with local NGOs and businesses to introduce regular beach clean-ups, no-plastic zones, and eco-friendly waste disposal systems at beach bars. Travelers are encouraged to bring reusable bottles and bags.

Morning vs. Evening Experience

In the morning, Double Six Beach feels serene and spacious—perfect for a sunrise walk, beachfront yoga, or grabbing a quiet coffee while watching early surfers hit the waves. It’s a great time for those seeking peace before the day gets busy.

By evening, the beach transforms into a social hub. Bars and cafés set up beanbags and umbrellas, music begins to play, and crowds gather to watch the sky shift into rich sunset hues. It’s lively, colorful, and ideal for those craving a vibrant scene.

Other Things to do at the Double Six Beach
